Film: Out of Nothing

The magic of Bonneville Salt Flats and land speed racing there is mentioned often around these parts. During my 2012 trip to the BUB speed trials and Bonneville, I had the good fortune to meet a very talented photographer and videographer, Chad DeRosa. He and I both had the same mission- capture the magic of the salt flats and Sodium Distortion race team. Our end vision however was very different- he was filming for “Out of Nothing,” an epic tale of four men forging land speed records.

An Interview with Photographer Ray Gordon

Ever wanted to know a magician’s secrets? I’ll admit, seeing Ray Gordon’s photography over the years has often left me in a state of wonder. How, why, where?! What on earth came upon someone and compelled them to drive a Camaro off a cliff? I got the chance to ask him all these questions and more.

His project THROTTLED was most recently displayed at the fourth annual One Motorcycle Show in February (check out my review of the One Moto 2013 here) and helped set the tone for the entire event. Chances are you’ve seen his work before- like in the shot I posted of Tori and Amy riding a minibike on the beach, or on countless motorcycle and hotrod websites.

I heard tell of being on the salt flats during this rain storm. It came out of no where- and at one end of the raceway you could see the clouds coming for you. Like they were hot on your tail, faster and faster. Riding away as quickly as you could, they’d be nipping at your heels… and then they’d catch you. Dumping rain… more than anyone had before experienced in the prior nine years of BUB.

Paul d’Orléans (of the Vintagent blog) took his old Chamonix camera to the Bonneville Salt Flats. Wet plate motorcycle photography on a dry lake bed. How cool!

This photo of Ana Llorente (racer and East Side Moto Babe) on her 175cc Motobecane is definitely my favorite.

I put on all my gear and took the Honda RC-51 out of the truck today… had some fun on riding on the salt flats. Set up my camera on timer for this shot… used my gloves for a tripod. ;P

FYI the jacket is an Icon 1000 Federal Jacket (it has armor!).

Mark Bjorklund of Super Rat with his Sodium Distortion Ducati S4RS salt racer. That’s the “I just broke my own record” smile.

Some shenanigans from today. Chad DeRosa, photographer/videographer extraordinaire is in the plane, getting some aerial shots of Mark Bjorklund riding the Sodium Distortion Ducati S4RS salt racer. He hit 166mph on the flats today.

These people are cramazing. What did they do with their time off today? Made this amazing sign. Shark Week at Bonneville!
